Catoptrophobia is the fear of mirrors. For many this seems very silly but there is a huge spiritual connotation to this. The fear of looking at oneself has more to do with not being or feeling very accepting or comfortable of whom they are. We don’t like what we see staring back at us.
Have you ever caught yourself saying “I wish I had what they had” or “I could never amount to much of anything”? I have, more times than I could count at one time in my life. All of our situations are unique to our circumstances, but in many ways they are all similar in basic nature.
Being comfortable and content, with all the gifts God has provided me, has been a long road coming. And I still have yet to arrive into the total freedom! God provides special abilities to each one of us. He makes available unique gifts specific to our call and purpose in life. The key word here is “Specific”. God is never going to give us the gift to be someone else or to have a carbon copy of someone else s life. Saying “I wish I had what that person has” or worse “I wish I was that person” is an insult to all the precious gifts given to us. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s hard to see the forest through the trees, and at times we all need to do a little spiritual lumber jacking!
A dear friend sent me a message that implied to “Love Ourselves” by means of inner reflection and focusing on the presence inside of us. The message was more along the lines of eastern mediation, but at the same time the words and directions are easily applicable to those of the Christian life. By taking time to spend with God each and every day I am able to sit, and reflect, on the presence inside of me. The presence in us is HIS presence. The more and more time we spend in communicating with His presence, by way of His spirit, we are dwelling in His direction and guidance for our lives. When we know ourselves we are also consciously aware of the goods and the bads. The only way to improve anything is to know and be truthful with ourselves to begin with. My goal is to continue to strive to reflect His character in my life, actions and words.
Self reflection, and true honestly with ourselves is no easy task but with God, by and through His Holy Spirit, all things are made possible to him who truly believes…
Prayer for Today:
Good and gracious Father, thank you for teaching me, and providing Your tools. Tools delivered by taking the time to sit down to really devotedly perform a self-assessment of who I am, where I have been and all that You have for me. Thank you for providing Your Son as our Redeemer, drawing us closer to You and Your prefect will for our lives. May we use all the blessed and unique gifts provided to each and every one of us. And for those still finding out what those gifts may be, may Your Spirit continue to provide the spiritual Light of revelation, hope and Your blessed love.
Be Forever Blessed ~
