Did We REALLY Need That ???

“My dear friends, don’t let public opinion influence how you live out our glorious, Christ-originated faith. If a man enters your church wearing an expensive suit, and a street person wearing rags comes in right after him, and you say to the man in the suit, “Sit here, sir; this is the best seat in the house!” and either ignore the street person or say, “Better sit here in the back row,” haven’t you segregated God’s children and proved that you are judges who can’t be trusted?” James 2:1-4 (The Message)

I witnessed something over the weekend that really made me, quite honestly brought me sadness at how people are determined to segregate themselves. This goes for ALL races. As I was flicking through the channels about to clean my house I happened to see on the guide that “Steel Magnolias” was on. Yeah I know a real chick flick but I must admit one of my all-time favorites. As I entered the channel on my remote I was surprised to find not the movie I was familiar with but instead a movie remake. Well put it to you this way it didn’t stay on long and I will explain why in the following.

Funny enough I usually don’t find myself leaving any type of “internet” comments on things but I actually came across a news blurb for the movie. After reading the posted comments I left the following comment myself;

“It was an absolute disaster as others have commented. It felt and came across as forced acting which all of these ladies should be and have shown themselves to be above.

Many of us as AMERICANS need to stop focusing on the race of things and let the past be the past. Is it unfortunate that the original had an all white cast??? I say yes and no. Yes it’s unfortunate that no one of color was in the movie (other than those playing hired help) but given the scrip and setting (In the upper middle class south) I think the portrayal and setting were extremely appropriate.

It’s up to parents and mentors to show the younger and current generations that where you are from goes into what country you were born in and if it is AMERICA then we are all deemed American.

My family is multi-cultural and they will be raised to identify themselves and other as Americans if  applicable regardless of race.

You don’t see different types of flowers being called anything other than “flowers” just because they all don’t look like roses?!? But amazingly at the same time we are ridiculous enough to not give the same intelligence to our fellow human beings.

I think back to the part of Alice in Wonderland where she was in the garden. In the scene Alice is surrounded by all the different types of flowers and fauna who begin to sing about many types there are and their different attributes. Unfortunately they then begin to taunt Alice in a very snobbish way of how she must be a “weed” because she is different from any of them.”

How fast are we to impose titles to others when we can’t identify them or find they are not what fits into our “normal” category. I know instinctively I find myself very guilty of this offensive attitude. 🙁  Its human nature that if we don’t feel comfortable with something it is placed into a “special” category all the while forgetting that each one of us is distinctively and beautifully made by our Creator.

As it has been said “God didn’t make any junk” but all his creations are beautifully made and unique for individually unique purposes. No two persons are exactly alike and thank God for that! It gives us the ability to learn and complement each other on this earth vs. spending so much time trying to tear the other down.

I know I have a lot of maturing to do myself in this respect so that I may be a sound model to my little ones and those around me. I may and do not get it right and stumble but all I and you can do is reach forward, dust ourselves off and try again.

Be Blessed,
